Why Heavy Equipment is Different
Managing heavy equipment (excavators, mining haul trucks, bulldozers, cranes, drilling rigs, graders, concrete mixers) is fundamentally different from managing road trucks.
The key differences:
Mileage vs engine hours
A road truck covers 200-500 km per day. Its maintenance is based on mileage. A bulldozer may cover 2 km per day but run for 10 hours. The only reliable maintenance metric is engine hours.
Communication protocol
Standard vehicles use the OBD2 port. Heavy equipment uses the SAE J1939 protocol via a Deutsch 9-pin or 6-pin connector. This protocol provides richer data: engine load, transmission temperature, hydraulic oil pressure, PTO status.
Operating environment
Heavy equipment operates on job sites, mines, quarries - not on roads. Conditions are harsher: dust, vibrations, slopes, constant load. Wear is accelerated.
Equipment cost
An excavator costs $200,000 to $1,000,000+. A mining haul truck can exceed $5,000,000. Protecting these investments requires more rigorous tracking than for a $150,000 truck.
The Tralogit Mining Module
Tralogit Mining Pro adds a complete operational module for mining sites and major construction projects.
8 specialized equipment types
Excavator, haul truck, dump truck, grader, bulldozer, crane, concrete mixer, drilling rig - each with its own maintenance profile, engine hours tracking, and inspection template.
Mining project management
Create and manage sites with: site boundary geofences on the map, load and dump zones for cycle detection, blast zones with clearance checks, project budget with progress gauge.
Automatic haul cycle detection
The system detects each complete cycle automatically from geofence events: truck enters load zone → cycle starts. Truck hauls to dump zone → transit duration recorded. Truck exits dump zone → cycle closed, payload logged. View cycle count, average time, and productivity per truck.
Equipment utilization dashboard
Real-time KPIs per truck: utilization % (working time / shift time), idle hours (engine on, speed = 0, > 2 minutes), cycle count and average duration, charts by time range and equipment type.
Project cost report
Full cost breakdown per site: trip costs (tagged to site), maintenance costs (tagged to site), idle fuel burn costs, cost per tonne calculation, budget gauge: actual vs. target.
FAQ
Does the Tralogit device work with excavators?
Yes. The device connects natively via the J1939 Deutsch connector, standard on excavators, haul trucks, graders, bulldozers, cranes, and drilling rigs. It reads the same rich data as for road trucks.
